Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a site suited to the tree’s mature size and recommended light exposure. Dig a hole two to three times wider than the root ball and no deeper, keeping the root flare at soil level. Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and add mulch without piling it against the trunk.

2. Watering: Water deeply after planting and regularly during the first growing season. Aim for evenly moist, well-drained soil, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings. Established trees generally need supplemental water only during extended hot or dry periods.

3. Pruning: Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed. Complete major shaping while the tree is dormant, using clean tools and avoiding the removal of more than one-quarter of the canopy in a single year.

4. Fertilizing: Fertilizer is usually unnecessary at planting. If growth is weak or a soil test shows low nutrients, apply a balanced, slow-release tree fertilizer in early spring according to label directions.
