Christmas Carol Hellebore Shrub

Bright white blooms for the winter garden

In a sea of holiday red and green, this hellebore comes to life with crisp white winter flowers set against lush, evergreen foliage. Its compact habit brings welcome color to shaded beds, entryways, containers, and outdoor patios when few other plants are blooming.

It also makes an attractive seasonal table topper; keep it in a cool, bright location indoors before returning it outside. Plant it in rich, well-drained soil with partial to full shade for a dependable, low-maintenance addition to the landscape.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a partially to fully shaded location with rich, well-drained soil. Position the crown level with the soil surface, and avoid disturbing the roots once established. For containers, use a pot with drainage holes.

2. Watering: Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, water when the top inch of soil feels dry, avoiding both soggy soil and prolonged dryness.

3. Pruning: Remove damaged or tired foliage in late winter as new growth and flower buds emerge. Trim spent blooms after flowering if desired to keep the plant tidy and limit self-seeding.

4. Fertilizing: Apply compost or a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Avoid overfertilizing, which can encourage excess foliage at the expense of flowers.
