Blue False Indigo Plant

A stunning display of intense blue flowers and unique seedpods

With its striking, intense blue flowers that bloom in mid-spring and continue for weeks, this hardy perennial brings stunning color to gardens and landscapes. Complemented by attractive steel blue-gray foliage, it not only catches the eye but also adds texture and depth to your yard. Once the blooms fade, the intriguing seedpods extend the interest through summer, providing a beautiful transition as the seasons change.

This durable, long-lived plant is native to the Eastern and Central United States and is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to enhance their landscape while supporting local ecosystems. It thrives in well-drained soils ranging from average to even poor, dry conditions and performs well in both full sun and part shade. During the growing season, it develops a bushy, shrub-like form reaching about 3–4 feet tall, making it ideal for mixed borders, pollinator gardens, or as a standout focal point in the landscape.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and place the plant at the same depth it was growing before.

2. Watering: Once established, this plant is drought-tolerant. Water deeply during dry spells, especially in the first year to promote strong root development.

3. Pruning: Prune back the foliage to the ground in late fall or early spring to encourage new growth. Remove any dead or damaged stems as needed to keep the plant healthy.

4. Fertilizing: This plant generally doesn’t require fertilization. If desired, apply a slow-release fertilizer in early spring to boost growth and flowering.
