Planting & Care
1. Planting: Tulip bulbs should be planted after the first fall frost or when soil temperatures drop below 60°F. They can be planted until the ground freezes. Most tulip varieties require 13-15 weeks of cool weather in order to grow and flower. Plant in full to part sun for best flowering. Planting in too much shade can result in floppy stems. Soil should be well drained, as low spots and poorly drained soils can cause bulbs to rot. Tulips should be planted 6-8’ deep and 2-3” apart. The pointy side of the bulb should face up. The stem comes out of the pointed tip and the roots emerge from the rounded base. Plant with a bulb fertilizer that’s low in nitrogen or use bone meal, which is rich in phosphorus. Cover the bulbs with soil and lightly water. After blooms have faded, remove stems and spent flowers, but leave foliage up for as long as possible to pull in light and store resources for next year.
2. Watering: Water the plant deeply once a week during dry spells, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Once established, it becomes quite drought tolerant, needing less frequent watering.
3. Pruning: To promote healthy growth, remove any dead or damaged foliage during the growing season. After blooming, cut back the plant to encourage new growth.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring to support vigorous growth and vibrant blooms. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the correct dosage.
